One of Sunderland's key strategic roads has recently  undergone works by Aurora Sunderland (BBLP) to improve the street lighting. The Sustainable Lighting Project involved the replacement of over 200 high wattage 'orange' Sox lanterns with new more energy efficient 'white light' LED lanterns.

(The image above shows a part completed section of Wessington Way; new white LED lanterns on the right, previous ‘orange’ Sox lanterns on the left.)

The new lanterns will generate an estimated energy saving of nearly 50% per year, cutting over £11,000 a year from the council's energy bill. This level of annual saving means that the project will pay for itself in energy savings in less than five years. In addition the new lanterns reduce the need for as many planned maintenance visits, giving savings against maintenance costs, less disruption to traffic and reduced risk to street lighting operatives and the travelling public.

The use of LED technology also improves the environment by reducing the city's carbon emissions by nearly 50% per year.

Ronnie Barnett, Aurora (BBLP) Street Lighting Contract Manager said, "We enjoyed working with Sunderland City Council to improve safety and energy efficiency on this project. Over the past 10 years we have installed over 34,000 new street lighting columns across the city using innovative products and reducing energy usage."
